The Saint Louis Art Museum is one of the most historic sections of Forest Park, St. Louis. It was opened as the Palace of Fince Arts for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904 World's Fair) and is the only remaining, permenant structure from the fair. The building was designed by Cass Gilbert and houses a complete art museum with Oceanic art, Pre- Columbian art, ancient Chinese bronzes, and 20th century German art. The museum has more than 30,000 pieces of art, including pieces by Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Picasso. The art museum has free admission and is not just for art experts. It is kid-oriented and gazes down at paddle boats in the Grand Basin.
