Francis Park

David Rowland Francis was the Govenor of Missouri from 1889-1893 and became the owner of a parge piece of propoerty in 1884 on which he established a vast farm. At the turn of the century, David R. Francis became the president of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. He proposed using his farm for the site of the 1904 World's Fair, but logisticts of transportation and construction made Forest Park a more practical site. In 1916 David Francis became the U.S. Ambassador to Russia and he gifted the city of St. Louis with the land of his farm to be transformed into a park and was named Francis Park. Today, the park lies in the middle of the St. Louis neighborhood, St. Louis Hills. The park is lined with wide, tree lined streets and is surrounded by houses, chruches, and schools. Francis Park has much to offer including bike and running paths, tennis courts, handball courts, racquet ball courts, softball fields, regular events such as professional bike races, free concert series, and holiday events.
